Soma Drop: Chrono Trigger

Soma Drop is a retrospective. A “nostalgia article”, if you’d like. I love the “Gaming Made Me” feature on RockPaperShotgun, so this is my version of it.

Soma is also the name of a “pacification device” used in Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World. I like the idea behind it…that it was administered to anybody who started feel the stressed or dissatisfied with life. The effects of the drug were immediate, effective, and long-lasting, but had an ironic downside: prolonged successive Soma “trips” resulted in a premature death; death by hypoperfusion.

Super.hype: Week 20, 2011

Super.hype is the closest thing to a preview that a guy like me can muster. It'll contain super obvious information, super obvious expectations, and super opinionated commentary preceded by news blurbs about what's up and coming in the hyped-up world of AAA games (and AAA gamesblogs).

The first game to have the honor of  Super.hype is Red Faction: Armageddon.

NEWS FOR THE WEEK of 5/23:
  • Kotaku thinks the new Deathspank game is gonna be great
  • Firingsquad (one of my favorite PC gaming blogs) posted a new video of MW3. No codpieces, though.
  • Gearbox is all revved up about Duke Nukem Forever. It's goooooooooooold baby!
  • Valve continues to push Steam onto its everloving public. And GDC of course.
 A wild super.hype appears! Prepare for battle...

    Indie Cred: George Moromisato's Transcendence

    In the beginning was Rogue. Rogue was the father of Hack, who begat Moria and Nethack. And Moria loved the Deep, but Nethack loved the Chaos. Nethack knew Chaos and begat Shiren the Wanderer, who was Nintendoed into Pokemon: Mystery Dungeon. Moria laid with the Deep and begat Diablo, who begat Dungeon Siege, who begat Titan Quest, who’s heart cried out in abandoned agony, who’s body was blown by the harsh Critical Wind into dust; only to be raised again by the gaming gods in the form of Diablo III.

    One night, when Moria was very drunk, Nethack played a joke on him, and made him lay with Star Control II. The product of that unholy union is George Moromisato’s Transcendence.

    the state of the industry, part III: Authenticity

    This week, I’m focusing on Authenticity, but first allow me to digress a bit.

    No? I’m not allowed to digress? Oh. Okay. Well, um. Okay then.

    So far this series has gone over two aspects of gaming and design that, in my opinion, have been misinterpreted, and as a result become distorted, detracting from the overall quality, craftsmanship, and enjoyment of gaming. I think it’s happened on both sides, too. Consumers and producers of this medium have gotten the wrong idea about what these words mean and what they look like in practice. All I’m trying to do is figure out how to bring everything back to the “core values” of gaming.

    Indie Cred: Private Joe (Chrome/Chrome OS)

    So I'm thinking it'll be cool to do a feature each week called "indie cred" in which I attempt to fumble about with an "Indie" game and publish the results with some smidgen of commentary.

    The first game to have the honor of being featured on "Indie Cred" will be the html5-based Chrome browser game "Private Joe".

    I came across Private Joe while browsing Chrome's recently launched App Store. I'm a sucker for WWII-era anything, so I jumped on it. The aesthetics also caught my eye and I was curious as to how they looked in action. And those floaty German words were pretty irresistible. But how does it play?
